INODE USAGE LIMITS

We have recently got in touch with some of our clients because of their INODE usage have reached our shared hosting threshold. From our web hosting Terms and Conditions, it states that:

“Clients will not use more than 30% of a systems resource for longer than 1 minute or more than 150,000 inodes on any single shared or resold hosting account or 500,000 inodes reseller wide for reseller accounts. Virtual Private Servers may not utilize more than 1,000,000 inodes. Dedicated server customers are free to utilize 100% of their dedicated server(s) resources including inodes. Clients reaching or exceeding this limit will be contacted so we can evaluate their needs and if necessary make other arrangements.”

So what exactly are INODES?

Inodes is basically the representation of all your files, folders and other objects stored in your web hosting account. This includes images, documents, emails and web files. So if you have an email account with hundreds of emails and attachments, then each email and attachments counts towards your inode limit. Multiply that with all the email accounts you have and the emails and attachments inside it.

Why do you limit INODES?

Inodes affects the systems performance. In a shared hosting environment, we need to ensure that inodes are fairly distributed to everyone thus imposing limits.

How do I reduce the inodes my account is using?

In order for accounts to have an optimal inode usage, we recommend the following:

  1. Delete unnecessary files and folders
  2. Clear old emails and SPAM mails, ensure the trash folder is purged
  3. Avoid using catch-all email accounts
  4. Clear the cache files

What do I do if I was informed my inode limits have been reached?

If you already followed the above recommendations and you are still hitting our inode limits, I would suggest you look at upgrading your plan to either a VPS or a dedicated server. You can contact our sales team at [email protected] to know more.
